CasePilot: Matter Management for Small Law Firms
Matter management for small law firms: clients, matters, tasks, key dates and private documents in one workspace, with access controlled on the server.
- React, Vite, Firebase Authentication, Cloud Firestore, Cloud Storage, Cloud Functions

The opportunity
Small law firms often run their practice across email, shared drives, spreadsheets and paper diaries. Deadlines, documents and client details end up in different places, and access is hard to control when several people work on the same matters. CasePilot explores a focused, matter-centred workspace for firms of one to ten people, starting with Sri Lanka and designed to adapt to other regions.
End-to-end ownership
Kavindu defined the product and its first release, designed the experience and visual identity, and built the application and its Firebase back end, including the access model and the tests that hold it in place.
Access control as a product feature
Every change goes through server functions that check the person’s role; the app never writes to the database directly. Firms are isolated from each other, matters can be restricted to their team, and documents are private files downloaded through the firm’s own session. Regional settings cover time zone, date format, currency, and Sinhala and Tamil text.
What Kavindu built
- A matter workspace with an overview, activity and notes, tasks, documents, contacts and key dates.
- A dashboard that brings overdue work, today’s work and the week ahead together.
- Client records, with a check for possible duplicates.
- Private document storage with versions.
- Roles for administrators, lawyers, staff and read-only users, and an audit history that records refused access.
- A full data export for administrators, and optional two-step sign-in.
Where it stands
CasePilot is an MVP prepared for a supervised pilot, used with synthetic data until its release checklist is complete. It makes no compliance claims. Calendar views, reports, a client portal and billing are planned rather than built.
